Cheering couple with whisky

For many people in Jack Daniel’s the most famous whiskey brand. However, this is certainly not the most popular among connoisseurs. So, what are the most popular whiskeys?

The most popular whiskeys in the world are:

  1. De GlenDronach 15 Year Old Revival
  2. De Glengoyne Legacy Series, Chapter One
  3. Ardbeg Traigh Bhan
  4. Legent Bourbon
  5. Glenmorangie Quitna Ruban 14 Year Old

In this article I will also come back to the most expensive whiskeys in the world and the most sold whiskey brands.

Why are these whiskeys so popular?

Each whiskey brand has a different reason why they are in the top 5. I will therefore also discuss them per brand here.

GlenDronach 15 Year Old Revival

This whiskey has been available on the market again since 2018. The whiskey is aged in Olorosso sherry casks and Ximenez Sherry casks. These barrels are used in the maturation of each GlenDronach. This method has been used since 1826! Flavors that match this whiskey are the flavors of apricots, figs, and cherries. It is also possible that there are chocolate and vanilla aromas during the tasting. The whiskey is bottled at an alcohol content of 46%.

Glengoyne Legacy Series, Chapter One

A limited edition is issued by Glengoyne every year. The first of this series was Chapter one. Besides being the first limited editon, it is also special about this whiskey that it is dedicated to a person. Namely to Cochrane Cartwright. This was Glengoyne’s manager in 1869. He was specifically the manager of the distillery during this time. This whiskey is dedicated to him because he was the one who took the production process to a higher level. He did this by slowing down rather than speeding up the process, which many others envisioned. This allowed the fruity and sweet flavors to settle better in the whiskey. Sherry casks were also used for the first time in his time, which also resulted in a different taste. Chapter One is a fruity whiskey. During the tasting, there may be, In addition to fruity flavors, flavors such as vanilla, red fruit and raisins also emerge. This is also due to the use of the sherry casks. The whiskey is bottled at an alcohol percentage of 48%

Ardbeg Traigh Bhan

This whiskey is one that does very well in terms of taste. It is therefore not surprising that you spend more on average for this whiskey than for another whiskey. For e-bay they go for around € 500. The whiskey is named after its place we once invented it and was born. Namely the beach on Islay. This is an island located in the west of Scotland. The whiskey is still made here. The Ardbeg Traigh Bhan is matured in American oak and sherry casks. It is a smoky and intense whiskey. This means that it is not intended for every whiskey drinker. Nevertheless, it does very well with the real connoisseurs. Flavors that emerge from this whiskey are the flavors of smoked chili, chocolate and paprika. The whiskey is bottled at an alcohol content of 46.2%.

Legent Bourbon

An American whiskey from the native region of Bourbon, Kentucky! This bourbon originated from a collaboration between Jim Beam, Fred Noe and Shinji Fukuyo. The goal of this collaboration was to make one of the best whiskeys ever. She wanted to achieve this by making use of influences from different regions. The whiskey is aged in charred sherry and oak barrels. These flavors will also be found during the tasting. Other flavors that come up are flavors like red fruit and corn. Logical because it is a bourbon. The whiskey is bottled at an alcohol content of 47%.

Glenmorangie Quitna Ruban 14 Year Old

Normally a Glenmorangie matures for 12 years. At the request of enthusiasts, it was asked whether the whiskey could age not 12 but 14 years this time. The goal was to bring out even more chocolate flavor. This normally already happened, but experts thought that longer ripening caused this flavor to strengthen. And they were right! A fun fact about Glenmorangie is that it belongs to the company behind Louis Vuitton, Moët and Hennesey. Another interesting fact is that the company uses the highest located stills in Scotland. The flavors that emerge from this whiskey are: Turkish delight, oranges, mint, nutmeg and of course chocolate. This whiskey is bottled at an alcohol content of 46%.

Below are a few more popular whiskeys listed:

  • Highland Park 16 Year Old;
  • Balvenie 12 Year Old The Sweet Toast Of American Oak
  • Highland Park Valfather

The Macallan

The Macallan is arguably Scotland’s best known distillery. It is also one of the largest producers of high-end whisky. Despite the large production, they have a number of gems of which only a few are made. These whiskys have matured in a barrel for years. This increases the value of the whisky. Because of these gems, the top 5 consists of 5 whiskys from Macallan. The distillery is located in Speyside, in the north of Scotland. The estate on which the company is located is called Easter Elchies. It covers more than 150 hectares and is planted with barley. This barley is of course used for the production of whisky. Since 2018, a visitor center has even been opened for tourists. It is a state-of-the-art building cut into the hills. The most expensive bottle of Macallan ever sold was a carafe of Macallan M at an auction in Hong Kong. It cost $ 628000. Macallan is now part of the Erdrington Group. This party also owns Highland Park. This appeared twice in the most popular whiskeys.

Johnnie Walker is a Scotch Whiskey producer and is the most famous whiskey in the world. It can be purchased in more than 2,000 countries and sells over 120 million bottles of whiskey annually. Johnnie Walker is owned by the Diageo company. One of the biggest companies in the beverage industry.

  1. Officer’s Choice

Officer’s choice comes from India and belongs to the company Allied Blenders & Distillers. A brand that also falls under this, for example, is Smirnoff. This makes Officer’s Choice the most sold distilled brand in the world. The big difference between Officer’s Choice and other Indian drinks is that it is made from rum instead of molasses. This is used for making other drinks in India. This type of drink is more like rum.

  1. MCDowell’s No.1

Like Johnnie Walker, this brand is affiliated with Diageo. It originated in 1898 in India and was founded by the Scotsman McDowell. MCDowell was also referred to as the distillery king at the time. MCDowell’s whiskey was launched in 1968. This whiskey is not sold all over the world but in a few countries. In these countries, however, he is so popular that he is in this illustrious list. A nice fact is that the company came on the market in 2006 with a new whiskey. The Diet Whiskey. The company claims this is the first light whiskey.

  1. Bagpiper

Bagpiper is roughly translated as a bagpipe. Despite the name, the whiskey does not come from Scotland but from India. This whiskey can be recognized by its square bottle and gold black packaging. You can compare this whiskey taste with a Blended whiskey. This whiskey is therefore very accessible and therefore good for the novice drinker. The alcohol content of Bagpiper is 42.8%.

  1. Seagram Royal Stag

Royal Stag is just like the above from India. In contrast to the others, it is still a fairly young company. It has only been around since 1995. It is made from distilled grains and Scottish malt. The brand is named after a deer species that is known for its antlers. These antlers are therefore something that is pontifically in the center of the bottle and incorporated into the logo. Seagram is a company with many ambassadors in the Indian cricket world. This makes it so very popular in India.
